FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is Epoxy?

Epoxy is a type of thermosetting polymer that, when mixed with a hardening agent, creates a strong, durable, and adhesive material. Widely used in coatings, adhesives, and as a flooring material, epoxy offers versatility and resilience in various applications.

What is Polyaspartic?

Polyaspartic is basically a supercharged version of epoxy, used for coating floors and other surfaces. Here's how to think about it simply:

  • Regular paint: It dries slowly, can be smelly, and might chip easily.

  • Epoxy: Like a tougher, faster-drying paint, but still might have a slight odor and requires careful application.

  • Polyaspartic: Imagine the toughest paint you can think of, then make it dry in just a few hours and have almost no odor! That's polyaspartic.

How long does it take to install Epoxy or Polyaspartic Floors or countertops?

The time it takes to install Epoxy or Polyaspartic flooring can vary depending on several factors including the type of epoxy system being used (solid epoxy, epoxy flakes, metallic epoxy, or epoxy with quartz), the condition of the existing floor, and the size of the area being coated. Here's a general breakdown:

  1. Solid Epoxy Flooring:

    • Installation Time: 1-3 days.

    • Process: This involves applying multiple coats of epoxy resin followed by a clear topcoat. Each coat needs time to cure before the next application, so the process can take a couple of days.

  2. Epoxy Flakes (or Chips) Flooring:

    • Installation Time: 1-3 days.

    • Process: After applying the base coats of epoxy, decorative flakes are broadcasted onto the wet epoxy surface. The flakes need time to fully adhere before excess flakes are removed and a clear topcoat is applied.

  3. Metallic Epoxy Flooring:

    • Installation Time: Typically 2-4 days.

    • Process: Metallic epoxy involves mixing metallic pigments into the epoxy resin. The installation process can take longer due to the complexity of achieving desired patterns and effects.

  4. Quartz Epoxy Flooring:

    • Installation Time: 1-3 days.

    • Process: Quartz epoxy flooring involves broadcasting quartz granules onto the epoxy-coated floor. Similar to flake flooring, excess quartz is removed and a topcoat is applied for durability.

The entire process of installing epoxy countertops involves several steps, and the total time can vary depending on the size and the complexity of your project. Here's a breakdown:

  1. Surface Preparation (1-2 days): This is the most crucial step and often takes the longest. It involves thoroughly cleaning, degreasing, and possibly etching the countertop to ensure proper adhesion.

  2. Epoxy Application (1-2 days): This involves mixing the resin and hardener, pouring it onto the countertop, and spreading it evenly. Depending on the desired design, additional layers or techniques might be required.

  3. Curing Time (24-72 hours): The epoxy needs time to fully harden and cure. This can take anywhere from 24 to 72 hours, depending on the specific epoxy used and temperature conditions.

In total, expect the epoxy countertop installation process to take anywhere from 3 to 5 days. This timeframe assumes the project is completed over several days, allowing for drying time between steps. Note that Temperature and humidity can slightly impact drying times which can impact the timeframe of your project.

Why can't I just use the epoxy kits sold in stores?

The epoxy products commonly found in stores are mostly epoxy paint rather than resin. Epoxy resin is favored over epoxy paint in situations requiring increased durability, strength, chemical resistance, and customizable aesthetics. While epoxy paint can suffice for simple residential or light-duty uses, epoxy resin delivers superior performance and flexibility, making it the ideal selection for challenging environments and durable flooring solutions.

Should we be concerned about any fumes emitted during the application process?

Epoxy and Polyaspartic materials do release fumes that can cause irritation to the eyes, skin, and respiratory system. However, implementing proper ventilation and following to safety precautions can greatly minimize these risks. At Ace Coatings, we incorporate an additive into our materials to mitigate any unpleasant odors, ensuring that the smell is not a concern during or after application.

Is Epoxy or Polyaspartic floors or countertops easy to maintain?

Epoxy and polyaspartic floors or countertops are indeed easy to maintain. They require minimal upkeep compared to other materials, as they do not need waxing, polishing, or sealing. This saves you time and effort in maintenance. A simple cleaning with a non-abrasive cleaner is typically all that's needed to keep them looking great. This makes epoxy and polyaspartic surfaces ideal for busy households or commercial spaces where low-maintenance solutions are preferred.

How much does Epoxy or Polyaspartic flooring (or countertops) typically cost?

The price of epoxy/polyaspartic flooring or countertops varies based on several factors, including the square footage of your space, the desired finish or design, and the condition of the existing floor or countertop. Despite potential initial costs, epoxy provides excellent value due to its exceptional durability and longevity compared to other high-performance flooring options.
